Title:
Ground Truths: Case Histories in Dam & Embankment Site Characterization

Presenter:
Jeff Schaeffers, P.Eng. Business Development Manager at ConeTec

Jeff has over 24 years of site characterization experience performing and managing field investigation projects throughout North America and beyond. Jeff graduated from Geological Engineering at UBC and is currently Business Development Manager for ConeTec Canada and Mud Bay Drilling.

Abstract:
Site investigations for dams and embankments present unique challenges, from difficult terrain and limited access to the need for high-resolution subsurface data. This presentation explores a series of case histories that highlight the integration of advanced geotechnical and geophysical techniques in site characterization. Emphasis will be placed on the use of sonic drilling, cone penetration testing (CPT), and in situ methods such as vane shear testing to evaluate soil behavior and stratigraphy. The role of geophysical tools in delineating subsurface anomalies and guiding further site investigation will be discussed. Specialized techniques such as Instrumented Becker Testing (iBPT) and capabilities for instrumentation installation will be demonstrated through several case studies. Attendees will gain insights into how multidisciplinary approaches can improve data quality, reduce uncertainty, and enhance dam safety assessments and all other site investigations.
