About
(Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2010, Thailand, 114 min, in Thai with English subtitles)

Explore themes of death and reincarnation through the lens of visionary Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul with this special screening of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. A collaboration between the Henry Art Gallery and Northwest Film Forum, enjoy opening remarks by Adrian Alarilla, Programming Director of Seattle Asian American Film Festival, and Em Chan, Curatorial Assistant at the Henry.

This screening program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Spirit House at the Henry, in which Weerasethakul is an exhibiting artist. Spirit House investigates how contemporary artists of Asian descent challenge the boundary between life and death through art. A thematic exploration of the work of thirty-four Asian American and Asian diasporic artists, Spirit House asks the question, what does it mean to speak to ghosts, inhabit haunted spaces, be reincarnated, or enter different dimensions? Inspired by spirit houses, small devotional structures found throughout Thailand that provide shelter for the supernatural, this exhibition considers how art can bridge the gap between this world and the next.

About the Film

Afflicted with kidney disease, Uncle Boonmee (Thanapat Saisaymar) is preparing himself for death. He has assembled his relatives in the countryside, convinced he will die within a few days. The ghost of his wife appears and offers guidance on his journey into the beyond, while his estranged son materializes in the guise of a jungle creature. Surrounded by his loved ones, Uncle Boonmee reflects on memories of his past lives, and he decides he must visit a special place before he goes.
